Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, translated means, “to yoke (connect) body and mind”. Unlike what most people think, this is not achieved by forcing your body into poses. 

The true yoga experience is about being present with where you are in your body, mind, breath and thoughts while moving through the poses. 

Whether beginner or seasoned yogi, you reap the greatest benefits when you approach the practice of yoga with compassion towards yourself.

A great teacher once told me the asanas (poses) we do in class are pre-pre-yoga and the savasana (meditation) at the end of class is pre-yoga.  It’s when we take that feeling of peace and serenity that we feel at the end of class into our daily lives, in traffic, in an argument and are able to stay centered and connected, that is the true essence of yoga. --Karen Shuman

Gentle Healing Yoga/ Restorative Yoga

Gentle Healing Yoga, also known as yin yoga, is a deeply relaxing practice designed to release tension and calm the nervous system.  With the gentle support of props, students passively stretch and energize the deep connective tissues of the body, open the joints and restore alignment.  It is extremely beneficial for those recovering from injury or trauma as well as those experiencing insomnia, menstrual discomfort, headaches, fatigue and so much more.

Hatha Yoga

Hatha Yoga combines physical exercises (postures), pranayama (breath control) and meditation.  The word hatha is derived from the two root terms “ha” meaning “ the sun” and “tha” meaning ‘the moon”.  Together the term stands for “union of force”.  Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold, fire and water, male and female, positive and negative and yin and yang.   Hatha yoga is the most common type of yoga practiced and can be taught in increasingly more difficult levels.

Kundalini Yoga and Meditation

Brought to North America in 1969, Kundalini yoga links movements with breath.  It is different from other styles of yoga by using a direct focus on moving energy through the chakra systems.  Kundalini yoga is sometimes called the “yoga of awareness” because it awakens the “kundalini” which is the unlimited potential that already exists within every human being.

Yoga for Your Body

This signature class created by Karen Shuman combines all of her favorite styles of yoga into one dynamic class: Hatha, Kundalini and an Iyengar style using ropes and props.  She will break down poses, enhance your physical and emotional strength and create more flexibility in your body.  This class is for everyone!!!

Yoga With Ropes and Props

This class is for all students, beginners to advanced.  We use ropes that have been properly mounted onto the wall to create a deeper more accurate stretch.  I know that after 1 class you will be hooked and will want to install ropes into your home.

Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar Yoga is based on the teachings of yoga master B.K.S Iyengar.  It is a very precise style of yoga with a special attention placed on alignment, timing and sequencing.  Using a variety of yoga props, Iyengar style has helped students with stress, back pain, multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue, high blood pressure and depression.  People of all ages and abilities will benefit from this practice.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a series of gentle flowing movements that when put together make up a meditative form of exercise to which physical and spiritual health benefits are attributed.  Originally developed in China as a form of self-defense, tai chi is a graceful form of exercise that has existed for around 2000 years. It is often been described as “meditation in motion”
